Climate Solution of the Week - FRIESLANDCAMPINA

Climate Solution of the Week - FRIESLANDCAMPINA

Saturday, May 04, 2024 04:13:26 PM

A proud member of the Dutch Sustainability Group, FrieslandCampina, one of the largest dairy cooperatives in the world and the owner of Rainbow brand in the Middle East, has partnered with the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MoCCAE) to launch one among the widest waste management and recycling drives in the UAE.

The initiative is in line with the UAE’s vision for waste management as well as the ‘We The 2031’ vision, which is a national environmental protection plan. Additionally, it builds on the company’s commitment to collecting 2 million Rainbow tins (weighing 100 tons) in 2023, a massive development from its 2022 figures of six tons of tins and a total of 110,000 tins.

Through this solution, FrieslandCampina aims to encourage the recycling of single-use plastic and other items such as tin and aluminum as well as achieve continuous engagement with students in the UAE by means of workshops and ‍ masterclasses. Rainbow will ensure the reusability of the tin cans through its partnership with Emirates Steel; it will give the cans to Emirates Steel, which will treat the tin cans and bring them back into their original shape for the purpose of reuse. Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has confirmed that FrieslandCampina's 2030 climate targets (scope 1 & 2) are in line with the maximum 1.5 degrees Celsius warming agreed in the Paris Climate Agreement. Reduction targets have been set for over 70% of the total scope of three emissions.

This collaboration with the ministry and Emirates Steel underscores our dedication to supporting and engaging with public & private sectors in our mission to champion sustainability in the UAE.
